The morals of each story appear to be similar in nature, yet how each author presents his/her characters are nearly opposite. The following comparisons will show how very different the two versions are based upon each writer’s respective point of view due to differences in gender as well as in era. Each author casts his/her antagonist, Little Red Riding Hood, and protagonist, the wolf, and minor characters, such as the mother and the grandmother, in basically the same roles, but each played in a very different manner; and these differences are shown with use of imagery, plot contrasts, and character descriptions.

The writers’ use of imagery proves a major difference in their stories. The brothers Grimm present the wolf as merely a clever wolf that tricks a child and her grandmother right into his gullet. “He stepped inside, went straight to the grandmother’s bed, and ate her up” (Grimm, 310). Carter’s imagery, however, is much more dramatic. Carter presents her wolf at first showing his very handsome and charming human alter ego. “When she heard the freezing howl of a distant wolf . . . she saw no sign of a wolf at all, nor of a naked man . . . and there sprang onto the path, a fully clothed one, a very handsome young one…” (Carter, 315). The Grimms’ tale is of only one very sly wolf sent to antagonize an assumingly young Little Red Cap right into his belly. “The wolf had scarcely finished speaking when he jumped from the bed with a single leap and ate up poor Little Red Cap” (Grimm, 310). After reading both tales, one might tend to muse that the Grimm brothers’ use of imagery proves that the Grimms’ view young females as naïve and easily duped by one falsely sheepish wolf. Carter not only tells tales of more than one wolf, she tells a tale of wolves who become men, some suave and clever, others brothers to the suave and clever. “Those are the voices of my brothers, darling. I love the company of wolves” (Carter, 318). These stories differ in their use of imagery, and they also vary on their plots a bit.

Though these differences are huge, the biggest differences in plot are in how these authors write their main character, Little Red Riding Hood, and how her actions lead to her ultimate demise in the Grimms’ fable and save her in Carter’s tale. The brothers Grimm tell the story of a naïve child who was not only easily tricked into revealing her plans and destination, but even more easily duped into hopping right into bed with a wolf disguised as her grandmother. Grimms’ victim, Little Red Cap, was presented as a heroine in Carter’s version of the tale. Carter shows a young woman who is very aware of her surroundings, yet was duped by the face of a charming young man rather than the face of a wolf. Upon reaching her destination, she becomes aware that something is awry. “. . . for the first time she’d seen it so, [her grandmother’s] Bible lay closed on the table” (Carter, 317). Carter’s heroine saves herself from being eaten by showing the man-wolf no fear and turning the tables on him using her wits, beauty and charm to keep the villain’s appetite at bay until midnight when “. . . the door of the solstice stands wide open…” and the conquered man-wolf is forever trapped in his wolf persona’s body (Carter, 319). These differences prove that women are viewed somewhat differently by the Grimms as men in their time than by Carter as a woman in her respective time. This theory is also proven by the authors’ description of the common characters in each tale.

Both writers present the same minor characters, such as the mother and the grandmother. The mother is present briefly just prior to the young protagonist’s journey to her grandmother’s house. Both authors tell of a mother sending her young daughter by herself on a trip through the woods to deliver a basket of food to her sickly old grandmother. Grimms’ mother strictly cautions the girl to stay on the path, though she seemed to be more worried about her daughter’s manners. “”Mind your manners, and give her my greetings. Behave yourself . . . and do not leave the path . . . And when you enter her parlor, don’t forget to say “Good Morning” (Grimm, 309). Carter’s mother is mentioned only in passing, but the fact that the young girl thought to take a carving knife leads the reader to believe that her mother taught her more than manners. “She is quite sure the wild beasts cannot harm her although, well-warmed, she lays a carving knife in the basket her mother has packed with cheeses” (Carter, 314). The sickly grandmother, living alone, miles from any neighbors, gets eaten by the wolf in both versions of each tale. In the Grimms’ tale, the grandmother is obviously consumed whole and later rescued “. . . alive but hardly able to breathe” by a passerby who stopped in to check on her (Grimm, 310). Carter, on the other hand, alludes that the grandmother was chewed as a wolf would chew its prey by stating, “He burned the inedible hair in the fireplace and wrapped the bones up in a napkin…” (Carter, 317). This description of the grandmother’s death immediately lets the reader know that the plot allows for no rescue for the grandmother in this version.

One does not have to be a rocket scientist to perceive the differences in these two story lines. The brothers’ Grimm and Angela Carter’s points of view are obviously from two different eras, not to mention their obvious difference in gender. The Grimms are from a time when women were not as well educated as men. It is a possibility that women of that time are used to standing around dumbly waiting for a man to save them. Carter, being an apparently educated woman from a more modern time, shows the concept of a woman who got herself into a jam using what God gave her (this includes a brain) to get herself back out of that jam. In short, the differences in these similar stories are quite clear, although the moral is a good one even now, in the 21st century: Young women should be very careful of strange gentlemen that take pains to appear harmless.

<img width='1' height='1' an article in WebProNews warning of the progression of Goodmail.

If you didn't read that article, here ya go:

"Goodmail Systems announced last week that four major Internet service providers will be adding CertifiedEmail to their repertoire of email filters. The sweeping partnerships give Goodmail automatic access to some 65 percent of US inboxes.
____________________________________
" Editor's Note: It's still not clear if those ISPs without free whitelists are exclusively using Goodmail (and in effect charging senders) to guarantee inbox placement of emails with links and images. If so, how does this affect your business/organization? Is this a good thing? What more information can you offer? Bulk email senders wanting to bypass the spam filters at Yahoo, AOL, Time Warner Road Runner, Comcast, and Cox, can now do so for a quarter of a cent per email.

"Or, as Goodmail competitor and third-party reputation service Habeas' CEO Des Cahill puts it, at a cost of $2.50 CPM.

"Goodmail unveiled its CertifiedEmail product last year amid a storm of controversy when AOL appeared to be foregoing its email whitelists (free sender reputation lists) in favor of fee-based Goodmail.

"The press was quick to take note, calling the arrangement an email tax, or a kind of postage that could derail small online businesses and non-profit organizations that depended on bulk email. AOL decided to keep its whitelists after significant public pressure. Yahoo joined up shortly after AOL.

"So news a year later that Goodmail is to be put into use at nearly all the major email service providers in the US (except Microsoft and Gmail, which announced last year they had no plans to institute a third-party authentication program), sent déjà vu levels to new heights.

"The most important question was: Do these email service providers have free whitelists and will they keep them? Or is Goodmail now the only option for bulk emailers looking to reach inboxes with images and links in tact?

"Spokespersons with both Verizon and Time Warner have told WebProNews that they will continue to offer whitelisting and have no plans to phase out the free offering. Cox and Comcast, however, may be a different story.

" 'Cox does not have a white list,' Cox Communications Director of Public Relations Susan Leepson told WebProNews. 'All email must go through our spam and virus scanning.'

"That includes email Cox sends its own subscribers, continues David Deliman, Product Communications Manager for Cox. Deliman clarifies that Goodmail is not a postage-type company, accepting payment to bypass filters.

" 'Goodmail performs a strict background check on all senders,' he said, 'and their CertifiedEmail is only available to legitimate organizations whose customers have already opted-in to receive e-mail from the company.'

"That doesn't necessarily mean that bulk emailers can have their messages delivered with images and links in-tact.

"Comcast did not return request for comments regarding whitelists and whether or not bulk emailers would have a choice beyond Goodmail.

"Though representatives for Goodmail and the ISPs that responded are heavy on the end-user benefit talking points (Goodmail's Vice President of Marketing David Atlas was reluctant to speak to the sender-side of the issue at all), Cahill thinks there the monetary benefits shouldn't be ignored.

" 'I think what Goodmail has proved is that ISPs want to make money off of email,' he said.

"The ISPs involved wouldn't speak to the financial arrangements between them and Goodmail Systems, but Atlas says they have a 50/50 split in revenue.

"While these arrangements may be beneficial to the end-user (a recent study by the ESPC showed over half of respondents were open to authenticated email), and definitely beneficial to Goodmail and the ISPs in terms of revenue, what of bulk senders?

"Atlas says non-profit organizations like the Red Cross, who needs protection from spoofing, can get up to an 85 percent discount. Small businesses, however, are not eligible.

" 'They haven't proved that senders can afford to pay Goodmail and the ISPs,' said Cahill, who believes the phishing problem can be better addressed via the refinement of industry standards, which is what quarterly-held Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group looks to do."

Article by Jason Lee Miller, a WebProNews editor and writer covering business and technology.

For background information on Goodmail, please read the article here: VIBlog

Getting out of forced subscription payments

I was just browsing myLot.com when I ran across a discussion topic that I thought might interest you.

Unlike PayPal or AlertPay subscriptions, where one can simply log in and end a subscription any time he or she pleases, Microsoft, Symantec, McAffee, and other antivirus software subscriptions are very difficult for a customer to unsubscribe.

I just read this article on Windows Secrets.com by Scott Dunn.
The guy has it all spelled out for the consumer how to unsubscribe from this sort of service should you decide to try a different brand. I'm sure it's also safe to say that all visitors do not read every post, particularly not the small print beneath the unread posts.

My point?
Read on, I'm getting to that.

All content here at Content City is either written by me or obtained from another part of the net. Notice what I did not write has a by line and a backlink to the content's origin.

There's no theme to your content, you say?
True, but there is a reason for that. Not all people are searching for the same information or usable content for their own blogs, reports, newsletters or ezines. Content City provides a wide variety of content for that very reason.

Finally, to the point: Use what you want, but don't plagiarize!!!
If you choose to use something from this blog, please copy it in its entirety and use the BY LINE as well as provide a LINK BACK to Content City.

I'll be back with more hodgepodge bits of content :)<f></f>

GREAT PUBS

"Y'know" said the Scotsman, "I still prefer the pubs back home. In
Glasgow there's a little bar called McTavish's. Now the landlord
there goes out of his way for the locals so much that when you buy
four drinks he will buy the fifth drink for you."
"Well," said the
Englishman, "at my local, The Red Lion, the barman
there will buy you your third drink after you buy the first two."
"Ahhhhh,
that's nothing," said the Irishman. "Back home in Dublin
there's Ryan's Bar. Now the moment you set foot in the place they'll
buy you a drink, then another, all the drinks you like. An angel appeared and said, "Why are you spending so much time on this one?" And the Lord answered, "Have you seen my spec sheet on her? She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have over 200 movable parts, all replaceable and able to run on diet coke and leftovers, have a lap that can hold four children at one time, have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart and she will do everything with only two hands."

The angel was astounded at the requirements. "Only two hands!? No way! And that's just on the standard model? That's too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish." But I won't," the Lord protested. "I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick AND can work 18 hour days."

The angel moved closer and touched the woman. "But you have made her so soft, Lord." "She is soft," the Lord agreed, "but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish."

"Will she be able to think?", asked the angel. The Lord replied, "Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason and negotiate." The angel then noticed something, and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one."

"That's not a leak," the Lord corrected, "that's a tear!" "What's the tear for?" the angel asked. The Lord said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love, her loneliness, her grief and her pride."
The angel was impressed. "You are a genius, Lord. You thought of everything! Woman is truly amazing."

And she is! Women have strengths that amaze men. They bear hardships and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy. They smile when they want to scream. They sing when they want to cry. They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous. They fight for what they believe in. They stand up to injustice. They don't take "no" for an answer when they believe there is a better
solution. They go without so their family can have. They go to the doctor with a frightened friend. They love unconditionally. They cry
when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards. They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies. They grieve at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no
strength left. They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors. They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you. The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning. They bring joy, hope and love. They have compassion and ideals. They give moral support to their family and friends. Women have vital things to say and everything to give.

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN, IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.
--------------------------------------
Please remember to leave your link with your comment & don't forget to linkback!
Thanks,
Shannon

Naomi Campbell Admits Guilt, Will Do Community Service

The 36-year-old supermodel pleaded guilty in the Manhattan Criminal Court. “During the morning of March 30, 2006, I threw a cellphone in the apartment. The cell phone hit Ana. That was an accident because I did not intend to hit her,” she told the judge. “I am advised that Ana was hurt, and I am sorry about that.”

What apparently ignited Naomi’s anger was her employee’s carelessness - Ana Scolavino had lost a pair of designer jeans that Naomi wanted to wear on Oprah Winfrey’s show. Her attack on Ana caused her employer some serious injuries, as she required four stitches in her head.

Judge Robert Mandelbaum has asked that the supermodel spend two days in an anger management program and pay $363.32 (£185) to reimburse medical expenses incurred by Ms Scolavino.

The judge was kind in recommending that Naomi serve her sentence indoors. This will prevent embarrassment similar to that suffered by singer Boy George, who swept the streets in order to settle drug charges in New York – and was accompanied by the media while doing it.

The whole hubbub started in March 2006, when Naomi was arrested for hitting her personal assistant with a cell phone in the head. Ana Scolavino has claimed that Naomi hit her in the back of the head with a jewel-encrusted cell phone in her Manhattan apartment, causing an injury that required stitches.

The supermodel was charged with second-degree assault, which usually results in a sentence of 1 to 7 years of prison. Because Naomi was absent from the court room in September 2006, the judge ruled that her next absence would ensue imprisonment.

In October Naomi was once again arrested, this time in London, on suspicion of assault, but she was released on police bail.

When she appeared in court in December, her lawyer, David Breitbart, stated that his client was hoping for an agreement to carry out community service, but with one condition: no company from the media while busy at work. He added: "She believes God is on her side and is going to take care of her."

The British supermodel has antecedents with physical assault against employees. In 2000, she pleaded guilty in a Toronto court to a 1998 assault on Georgina Galanis, her then assistant. The supermodel had struck her assistant with a telephone in a hotel room and threatened to throw her out of a moving car.

In 2005, she allegedly slapped assistant Amanda Brack and repeatedly hit her head with a BlackBerry handheld personal organizer. Another documented case is that of Italian actress Yvonne Scio, who has claimed, “She punched me in the face. She was like Mike Tyson.”

Naomi has been quoted by the Daily Mail, confessing how difficult it has been to have the spotlight on her allegedly short temper: “It's been really a tough year in terms of accusations and stuff like that. It's been very hurtful and blown out of proportion.”

"I've had to learn from my mistakes but I don't harbor grudges. I'm a human like everybody else. I just want to have my health every day and my family's health.”

It remains to be seen how Naomi will deal with her recent punishment. ===========================
Shannon's Editorial

Employers don't get to brutalize their employees, publicly or domestically.
Maybe Naomi and other spoiled stars will realize that just because someone is on their payroll, it doesn't mean that someone is their property to use and abuse as the star sees fit.

*Don't forget to leave your link with your comment*

SEO Algorythms

With moderate search engine optimization knowledge, some common sense, and a resourceful and imaginative mind, one can keep his or her web site in good standing with search engines even through the most significant algorithm changes. The recent Google update of October/November 2005, dubbed "Jagger", is what inspired me to write this, as I saw some web sites that previously ranked in the top 20 results for extremely competitive keywords suddenly drop down to the 70th page. Yes, the ebb and flow of search engine rankings is nothing to write home about, but when a web site doesn't regain many ranking spots after such a drop it can tell us that the SEO done on the site may have had some long-term flaws. In this case, the SEO team had not done a good job predicting the direction a search engine would take with its algorithm.

Impossible to predict, you say? Not quite. The ideas behind Google's algorithm come from the minds of fellow humans, not supercomputers. I'm not suggesting that it's easy to "crack the code" so to speak because the actual math behind it is extremely complicated. However, it is possible to understand the general direction that a search engine algorithm will take by keeping in mind that any component of SEO which is possible to manipulate to an abnormal extent will eventually be weighted less and finally rendered obsolete.

One of the first such areas of a web site that started to get abused by webmasters trying to raise their rankings was the keywords meta tag. The tag allows a webmaster to list the web site's most important keywords so the search engine knows when to display that site as a result for a matching search. It was only a matter of time until people started stuffing the tag with irrelevant words that were searched for more frequently than relevant words in an attempt to fool the algorithm. And they did fool it, but not for long. The keywords meta tag was identified as an area that was too susceptible to misuse and was subsequently de-valued to the point where the Google algorithm today doesn't even recognize it when scanning a web page.

Another early tactic which is all but obsolete is repeating keywords at the bottom of a web page and hiding them by changing the color of the text to match the background color. Search engines noticed that this text was not relevant to the visitor and red-flagged sites that employed this method of SEO.

This information is quite basic, but the idea behind the aforementioned algorithm shifts several years ago is still relevant today. With the Jagger update in full swing, people in the SEO world are taking notice that reciprocal links may very well be going the way of the keywords meta tag. (i.e. extinct) Webmasters across the world have long been obsessed with link exchanges and many profitable web sites exist offering services that help webmasters swap links with ease. But with a little foresight, one can see that link trading has its days numbered, as web sites have obtained thousands of incoming links from webmasters who may have nevër even viewed the web site they are trading with. In other words, web site popularity is being manipulated by excessively and unnaturally using an SEO method.

So with keyword meta tags, keyword stuffing within content, and nöw link exchanges simply a part of SEO history, what will be targeted in the future? Well, let's start with what search engines currently look at when ranking a web site and go from there:

On-page Textual Content
In the future, look for search engines to utilize ontological analysis of text. In other words, not only your main keywords will play a factor in your rankings, but also words that relate to them. For example, someone trying to sell NFL jerseys online would naturally mention the names of teams and star players. In the past, algorithms might have skipped over those names, deemed them irrelevant to a search for "NFL jerseys." But in the future, search engines will reward those web sites with a higher ranking than those that excessively repeat just "NFL jerseys." With ontological analysis, web sites that speak of not only the main keywords but other relevant words can expect higher rankings.

The Conclusion:
Write your web site content for your visitors, not search engines. The more naturally written sites can expect to see better results in the future.

Offering Large Amounts of Content
This can frequently take the form of dynamic pages. Even now, search engines can have a difficult time with dynamic content on web sites. These pages usually have lengthy URLs consisting of numbers and characters such as &, =, and ? The common problem is that the content changes so frequently on these dynamic pages that the page becomes "old" in the search engine's database, thus leaving searchers seeing results that contain old information. Since many dynamic pages are created by web sites displaying hundreds or thousands of products they sell, and the number of people selling items on the Internet will obviously increase in the coming years, you can expect that search engines will improve their technology and do a better job indexing dynamic content in the future.

Over the years, many web sites reached top spot for competitive keywords by flexing their financial muscle and buying thousands of text links pointing to their site with keywords in the anchor text. Usually these links would appear like advertisements along sidebars or navigation areas of web sites. Essentially this was an indirect way of paying for high Google rankings, something which Google is no doubt trying to combat with each passing algorithm update. One idea of thought is that different areas of a web page from a visual point of view will be weighted differently. For example, if a web site adds a link to your site within the middle of their page text, that link should count for more than one at the bottom of the site near the copyright information.

This brings up the value of content distribution. By writing articles, giving away free resources, or offering something else of value to people, you can create a significant amount of content on other web sites that will include a link back to your own.

The Conclusion:
It all starts with useful content. If you are providing your web site visitors with useful information, chances are many other sites will want to do the same. SEO doesn't start with trying to cheat the algorithm; it starts with an understanding of what search engines look for in a quality web site.

About The Author
An expert at organic SEO, John Metzler has held executive positions in the search engine marketing industry since 2001. This is one of the easiest ways of launching into an online business and earning more profits.

Assuming you are already into an affiliate program, what would be the next thing you would want to do? Double, or even triple, your commissions, right? How do you do that?

Here are some powerful tips on how to boost your affiliate program commissions overnight.

1. Know the best program and products to promote. Obviously, you would want to promote a program that will enable you to achieve the greatest profits in the shortest possible time.

There are several factors to consider in selecting such a program. Choose the ones that have a generous commission structure. Have products that fit in with your target audience. And that has a solid track record of paying their affiliate easily and on time. If you cannot seem to increase your investments, dump that program and keep looking for better ones.

There are thousands of affiliate programs online which gives you the reason to be picky. You may want to select the best to avoid losing your advertising dollars.

Write free reports or short ebooks to distribute from your site. There is a great possibility that you are competing with other affiliates that are promoting the same program. If you start writing short report related to the product you are promoting, you will be able to distinguish yourself from the other affiliates.

In the reports, provide some valuable information for free. If possible, add some recommendations about the products. With ebooks, you get credibility. Customers will see that in you and they will be enticed to try out what you are offering.

2. Collect and save the email addresses of those who download your free ebooks. It is a known fact that people do not make a purchase on the first solicitation. You may want to send out your message more than six times to make a sale.

This is the simple reason why you should collect the contact information of those who downloaded your reports and ebooks. You can make follow-ups on these contacts to remind them to make a purchase from you.

Get the contact information of a prospect before sending them to the vendor’s website. Keep in mind that you are providing free advertisement for the product owners. You get paid only when you make a sale. If you send prospects directly to the vendors, chances are they would be lost to you forever.

But when you get their names, you can always send other marketing messages to them to be able to earn an ongoing commission instead of a one-time sale only.

Publish an online newsletter or Ezine. It is always best to recommend a product to someone you know than to sell to a stranger. This is the purpose behind publishing your own newsletter. This also allows you to develop a relationship based on trust with your subscribers.

This strategy is a delicate balance between providing useful information with a sales pitch. If you continue to write informative editorials you will be able to build a sense of reciprocity in your readers that may lead them to support you by buying your products.

3. Ask for higher than normal commission from merchants. If you are already successful with a particular promotion, you should try and approach the merchant and negotiate a percentage commission for your sales.

If the merchant is smart, he or she will likely grant your request rather than lose a valuable asset in you. Keep in mind that you are a zero-risk investment to your merchant; so do not be shy about requesting for addition in your commissions. Just try to be reasonable about it.

Write strong pay Per Click ads. PPC search engine is the most effective means of advertising online. As an affiliate, you can make a small income just by managing PPC campaigns such as Google AdWords and Overture. Then you should try and monitor them to see which ads are more effective and which ones to dispose of.

Try out these strategies and see the difference it can make to your commission checks in the shortest of time.

Ponderisms....

Truth or Comedy?

* I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people
die of natural causes.

* Gardening Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing
a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. Me too, it happens. So what do you do to make
the bad day go away? About anything but more work
would be my guess for most humans.
Look at it like this, there are other ways of surfing
besides clicking each site. There are upstanding, honest
autosurfs out there that are not trying to pull a 12DailyPro
on the internet world. The mere generalization of
autosurf including these types of investment surfs
is appalling to me and should be to you as well.

There is a huge difference and, although some will
never admit that, doesn't make all autosurf programs
scamming ponzis. Sure its easy to open 2 or 3 autos
then hit the sheets, go watch TV or whatever. We
have all walked away from our desks for one reason
or another, have we not? Do you always stop everything
when a phone needs answered, a kid needs juice or the
dog is crying to go out? Of course not, who has time?
What is the point? Am I just here to defend the rights
of surfers who view autosurf and actually join a thing
or two? Not really. Just a little about where this article
is actually going. :)

Back to the bad day scenario...
You have had a long hard day (online or off) now it is
late and time to get clicking. Your wrists and fingers
are killing you, but yet you need credits. Here is the
ticket for those BigDog followers that are afraid to
open more than 4 windows because it is considered
"cheating." Open 2 autos and 2 manuals. This is
perfect for surfing 15 second and under surftimers.

Open your tabs this way: Auto, Manual, Manual, Auto.
If you are not viewing the Autos, you are missing out
on bonuses in most honest automatic traffic programs.
You are forced to click to gain credits on manual,
no biggie, clicking keeps your carpal tunnel acting
up so you don't fall asleep. After a while of clicking
in the pattern you have down, you will find that the bad
day is slowly leaving your body and you have absolutely
nothing on your mind anymore. Hey, what's that?
Can I use that? Open site/bookmark/whatever and move
on. Surfing to calm yourself and relieve stress is so
much more effective than one would imagine...if you
are not surfing a bunch of sites that kill your pc with
spyware, viruses, multiple popups, or whatever, that is.
How do you avoid lame traffic sites that don't care to run
a clean surf rotation?

Very easily, read the FAQ. If the admin are willing to take
the time to manually approve each submitted site for your
viewing, that's a good place to sign up. These admin risk
their own pcs opening sites for approval so that their
members do not have nearly as much risk if they are not
AV protected. Once a member, read the mails from admin
to see what type of game they have going on--you could
make money on the side from places that pay commissions
on sales from your direct downline. Also pay attention
to the fact that successful sites encourage surfers to
surf, lame sites beg in almost every email. If you cannot
tell the difference, check your account. If you put up
1000 credits a week ago and still have 800 or more, they
are begging their members to surf and it is very much
a waste of your time to make that one of your main surf
stops. Sure, keep it and surf it once in a while, there may
be some different eyes there.

If you are new to a site and are surfing up nothing but
obstacles and spyware, REPORT the bad sites, even
if you have to actually wait a few seconds for your pc
to unfreeze and allow it--even if you actually have to
do an extra click on the BACK button to nail a framebreaker.
Most admin are willing to clean up their abuse reports
and smooth out the surf. A lot of admin will give you
extra credits for helping them clean up their surf so they
don't have to sit and surf their own program hunting
bad sites that were changed after approval.

Don't discriminate, get your surf on! Auto, manual, whatever.
Get that link ranking up there! You can do it and make the
knots in your neck go away too.

Surf for credits and stress-relief. Go make some sales,
build a downline and relax. Traffic exchanges are like
interactive TV. Open one window or many, that is up to
you. As long as you are actually doing the surfing yourself,
you are NOT guilty of "cheating" anyone. If you are using
software or somehow over-clicking, face it, that's cheating
and cheaters never get anything but deleted.

Read on for a list of quality exchanges that do care about
their members and their members' surfing experience.

VisitorInvasion

Byte-Size

GrabMyBux

SJOPromotions

Smokin-Hits

SnoozeULose

CheapClicks

SmileyTraffic

LeftyHits

Leaf-Surf

There are many more where that came from. Here are just a few reasons why:

A woman over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night to ask, "What are you thinking?" She doesn't care what you think.

If a woman over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do. And, it's usually something more interesting.

A woman over 40 knows herself well enough to be assured in who she is, what she is, what she wants and from whom. Few women past the age of 40 give a hoot what you might think about her or what she's doing.

Women over 40 are dignified. They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant. Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you, if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated. A woman over 40 has the self-assurance to introduce you to her women friends. A younger woman with a man will often ignore even her best friend because she doesn't trust the guy with other women. Women over 40 couldn't care less if you're attracted to her friends because she knows her friends won't betray her.

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 40. They always know.

A woman over 40 looks good wearing bright red lipstick; this is not true of younger women. Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off you are a jerk, if you are acting like one! You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed hot woman of 40+, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year-old waitress.

Ladies, I apologize.

For all those men who say, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free", here's an update for you. Now 80% of women are against marriage, and why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig, just to get a little sausage.
------------------------------------------------------------------
VisitorInvasion.com

Everyone needs Coodoz

Raise Your Website Traffïc...

Raise Your Website Traffïcwith RSS - Blogs and Yahoo!
By Kamau Austin

In our first part of this article, we raised the question of whether blogging and its distribution tool, RSS feeds, are really useful for Internet and Search Engine Promotion. Are RSS feeds and blogs really the next big thing in web marketing, distribution, and content creation or are they just hype?

There is a lot of hype around RSS, blogs, and derivative technologies like podcasting. But are they really useful to the serious Internet marketer or are they just the subjects used by marketers looking to create new products to grab our hard-earned marketing dollars.

We also covered the objections and reservations from some Internet marketers about the usefulness of RSS feeds and blogs to the bottom-line of their ebusinesses. This can be contrasted to our discovery of people like Willie Crawford and companies like Weblogs, which generate 6- and 7-figure incomes from blogs, RSS, and related technologies with Google Adsense.
To illustrate, if the typical Internet marketers not just web gurus can benefit from blogs and RSS feeds, I promised to share my experiences with my new sites not yet optimized for the search engines.
With virgin websites, I could observe the traffïc pulling power of blogging, pinging, and RSS. If you would like to read or familiarize yourself with Part 1 of this article, you can read it at... http://www.searchengineplan.com/articles/feb06-rss-prt1.htm
To test the effectiveness of the ability of RSS feeds and blogs to attract and drive traffïc to my web properties, I did some quick and insightful research on the topic. Brandon Hong's Marketing Rampage with Blogs and RSS was the resource which best enabled me to understand the techno-jargon associated with blogs and RSS feeds. Believe me, I have a 10-year background in information technology, and I can't make heads or tails out of the alphabet soup served up by tech geeks on blog and RSS media. Plus, I run a very busy SEO consultancy and virtual real estate (VRE Adsense and Affïliate Sites) side business, so I don't have the time to muck around in nebulous articles on these topics. If you even remotely feel like me about the complexity of blogs or RSS, do yourself a favor and obtain Brandon Hong's multimedia ebook of screen-capture videos. The easiest way to start blogging is to setup an account with

With virgin websites, I could observe the traffïc pulling power of blogging, pinging, and RSS.

You can read a full review of the book at... http://www.searchengineplan.com/articles/hongrss.htm.
I have been blogging for almost 3 years, but RSS feeds have been harder to grasp in terms of development and marketing. The easiest way to start blogging is to setup an account with
Experienced web designers should not have a problem setting up a www.Blogger.com account. Blogger.com is actually a good initial choice because it provides an easy setup for RSS feeds. The setup can be done by going to the Settings Tab in Blogger, clicking the site feed link, and filling out the forms. The next issue to consider is the complex RSS compatibility issue. You can sidestep the decision about whether to go with RSS version 2.0 or Google's Atom standard by "burning your RSS feed" or making them more compatible with all popular RSS formats with a third party service like Feedburner.com. After creating your RSS feed in Blogger, you should have it burned in the Feedburner.com service; it will guide you through the process. The optimized Feedburner.com RSS feed is then ready to be submitted to the major RSS directories. I would suggest creating a few descriptions of your blog and then submitting both your blog and RSS URLs to the appropriate RSS and blog directories. My firm fast-tracks blog and RSS feed promotion by submitting them to about 90 directories that specialize in this type of media including Yahoo! and MSN RSS content services www.Blogger.com or www.Bloglines.com. Perhaps most importantly, you get traffïc statistics about your RSS subscribers and readers.

The results of my RSS and blog traffïc research over the last 3 months are amazing! I have been totally blown away by the research. I am excited about RSS and blog usage, despite the good and bad news: The bad news: According to a White paper on blogging, sponsored in part by Yahoo!, 88% of Internet users don't know what RSS technology is and 96% of Internet users stated they do not use it! The good news: 27% of Internet users experience RSS feed content on their My Yahoo and MSN web accounts, although they don't realize it! Moreover, 4% of Internet users actively use RSS feeds. This means 31%, or almost one-third (1/3), of Internet users Both the Blogger.com service and, more extensively, Feedburner.com can be configured to ping the major RSS and blog directories. This information shows that RSS and blogs are growing technologies for serious Internet business people to adapt into their marketing mix.
My personal research over three months showed that when I regularly updated my blog sites, burned RSS feeds pinging the major directories increased my traffïc a whopping 25%!
Blogs, RSS feeds, and articles distributed regularly to major host sites and distribution services actually rivaled the traffïc of my highly optimized top-ranking SEO and VRE sites. More importantly, traffïc from blog, RSS, and article-driven traffïc actually made twice as much income in sales and Adsense revenue than my traditional SEO sites.
Needless to say, once a skeptic, I am now a big believer in the power of RSS feeds and blogs to boost my bottom-line. I will leave you with a controversial statement from a SEO and Searchpreneur.
Dr. Jakob Nielsen recently referred to search engines as "the leeches on the Internet." He feels "Search engines extract too much of the Web's value, leaving too little for the websites that actually create the content. Liberation from search dependency is a strategic imperative for both websites and software vendors." With Yahoo! and MSN soon to enforce email postage, according to a recent article by the New York Times, RSS and blogging may become the best and latest arsenal for small business to continue to survive and thrive in the Internet economy. If they're a pro they'll be spending hundreds to thousands of dollars every month for marketing their website. All the advertising dollars are reinvested profits so they make sure they know what works and what doesn't.

You'll find many proven ways that can honestly showcase your website to your customers without having to spend any of your hard earned money. If you are a new netmarketer then its tempting to stick to freebie alternatives than risk spending more than you can really afford. Eventually you'll lose the popularity or you'll belly-up your internet business.

Rules to Successful Online Business, You need to diversify that portfolio, as with the stockmarket, marketing means spreading your bets.. That's basically targeting your market success.

Don’t stress if you haven't got the funds for a major advertising google adwords campaign, or other ppc links, we have a range of solutions that can increase your traffic and therefore lead to sales/sign-ups and actual Profit for you. (Traffic = Sales/Sign-ups =Profits ) Read on for our evaluation of the current leading contenders and some guidelines of what to avoid when signing up for free marketing programs.

If you would have say 14 'fires' going with your iron in it and each of those fires would produce only ONE new member for you every 14 days, you would in other words be generating ONE new sales or member every day which would make you a 'top recruiter' or ‘top seller’ straight away.

Method 1

Learn how to trade links with other web sites. You can attract and drive massive amounts of free traffic to you website by reciprocally linking with similar websites. They must be related to the subject of your web site. For example, say a website is promoting Internet Promotion related resources, and you link to their website and you are promoting web design and development you are of similar enough targeted search engine categories then it should improve your Google PR Rating and Alexa popularity status, but say their content is for Auction Ebooks, this will certainly detract from your overall link-popularity. (Tips : download the Google Toolbar and use it to compare PR Ratings with prospective linking partners).

In addition focused trading of links (reciprocal links) can quickly increase your presence in search engine rankings, rising to far higher positions. Everybody knows that Search Engines love website which maintain plenty of inbound and outbound relevant themed links. You can drive a lot of targeted traffic with popular reciprocals to position you at the top of major search engines.

To see the full range of internet marketing options internet marketers need to know, visit our main site clicking HERE or joining our newsletter by adding your email to our mailing list.

Method 2

This is a Simple and Proven way to generate fast free traffic to any website simply by joing one of many free Traffic Exchange services. Some different types of exchanges are start page exchanges, manual surf, and auto surf. (Tips : go to Google and search for Traffic exchange)

Usually, a traffic exchange is a website that uses software to enable members to view each others' websites, ratio's vary from 1:1 to 10:1. You earn credits when you view someone's site, and you spend those credits to have others view your site. Alternatively there is usually an option to purchase the credits you want but beware some can deliver your hits and promote your site slower than other Traffic Exchanges.

The best thing to watch out for is the quality not the amount of traffic you receive for your efforts. AutoSurfs generally provide pretty poor results - especially if its a fast (under 10 seconds per view) exchange, the alternatives are start pages, manual or paid2surf exchanges, promote any of them to get referrals. If you get a big enough downline they will earn you massive hits from your favorite traffic exchanges !

Method 3

Build an Online Community or join an existing community on the internet (go to Google and search for internet business, online forum, work at home bbs, etc) . It might be an online message board, e-mail discussion list or public forum. These people get involved in a community because they are seeking similar netrepreneurs to join forces and discuss.

The best thing about forums is that when you setup your account, you can create a 'signature file' or description 'tag' of your business and a link back to your website or newsletter that is automatically added to the footer of every post you submit. It's practically like having a meeting with someone then leaving your virtual business card.

Being known in forums will not only help build up your reputation as an apporachable and honest, webmaster but it really can be a vital grapevine for all the new ideas and opportunities appearing on the horizon. Don't spam them, a slow burner but a definite longterm method for generating traffic for your website, and don't forget, it's FREE.

Method 4

PR is an effective way to generate free traffic to your website just by Writing Articles. It involves some thinking time on your part but can be very rewarding. The Internet is crying out for constant supplies of original content.

You can get an awful amount of free advertising by including your name and url at the bottom of your article. You could include an albeit brief description of yourself, your email address and website address. You'll get targeted visitors who wish to learn more about your experiences and and expertise and will be very willing to check visit your website.

Try to write regular articles (at least one article per week) and submit them to e-zines, web sites and magazines that accept article submissions.

Use an attractive title. Examples :-
1000 Ways to Build an MLM Empire!
How to Speculate on Market Trends.
Seo Experts tips to Google Ranking.

Remember to Include your resource details at the bottom of the article or all will be for nothing! Always mention a brief description of yourself, your email addy and website address.

Method 5

Publishing newsletters is probably the best way to build a permanent opt-in list to generate constant free traffic to your website. Don't fret if you are not a writer. There are literally millions of articles available under Common Usage License available from the following sources:-

a. Check out from search engines using words
like 'free articles' or 'free content'.
b. From ezine directories that provide articles from writers who want to a link in trade for articles reprinted in your newsletter.

Visitors who subscribe to your free newsletter can receive all your latest tips, tricks and news information targeting your market speciality. We advise you don't use a free third party opt-in provider as they invariably load your newsletter with unrelated and highly distracting links. The company of the month right now happens to be PayPal. The Wall Street Journal published an article on Ebay's Jeff Jordan's preparations for Gbuy, the so called PayPal killer (PayPal is owned by Ebay). Many news sources and blogs are anticipating Gbuy to quickly become a PayPal killer given Google's huge brand name recognition and reach with consumers But the whole PayPal killing talk is really much ado about nothing. I have no doubt whatsoever that Google will release Gbuy, but I do have significant doubts as to whether it will actually replace PayPal as many merchant's payment processor of choice. Given Google's recent releases, and given how PayPal has positioned itself in the marketplace, I would not be surprised of Gbuy proves itself to be a significant flop considering all the attention it has been given.

PayPal's Vulnerability

Jeff Jordan of Ebay has every right to be scared, however. Executives have a history of losing their dignity and control when they feel pressured by Google. Steve Ballmer is well known for his professional wrestling-like tirade in which he sent chairs flying and cursed the name of Google, and Yahoo is not much better having publicly given up its quest for search dominance, which in effect was Yahoo executives crying "Uncle!" with the hope that they could finally focus on something that they could actually excel in.

Professional wrestling rant's aside, Jeff Jordan does have reason to be worried. PayPal, unlike Yahoo and Microsoft, is much more vulnerable to a direct attack from Google. The history of PayPal is filled with trouble with CEO's, run-ins with the mafia, and pressure from an Attorney General. This article, however, is not the place for a lesson on the history of PayPal (a book was written for that), regardless of how fascinating it might be.

Article Tip
Did you know that PayPal is one of the few companies with a single letter domain name? Chëck it out: X.com.

The problem with PayPal is that it has not solidified itself in any other market besides the payment option of eBay merchants. The result is that many website owners view PayPal as a 'cheap' option. Furthermore, even though PayPal does allow non-members to purchase items through their system, it is not as easy as many merchant's would like. Many of the problems of PayPal were actually discussed on the forums a while ago.

These problems open up a vulnerability for PayPal. If Google releases a product that improves on the downfalls of PayPal in much the same way that they were able to revolutionize online maps, then PayPal should be worried. Google does have a knack for making web applications that make existing applications look outdated and simplistic.

Why Gbuy Will Not Kill PayPal

Experts have been predicting the wild success of Google in many different industries for some time. When Froogle was released it was thought by many to be a major threat to Amazon.com. Although Gmail has been a success, there have been no reports of Yahoo Mail suffering significant attrition (in fact the buzz over the new Yahoo Mail interface shows just how much interest there is in Yahoo Mail). And although Google News is a highly useful service, it is hardly considered the default news service for most web users.

The fact is, the past few Google releases have been relative failures. Google admitted that they screwed up with their video service (the Apple iPod Video is much more successful and sets the bar much higher than Google is currently meeting). Google Reader was met with a collective 'ho-hum' from the webmaster community (as was Google Pack), and even though Google Sitemaps may be useful, it is still under used. Google Analytics still is not able to accommodate mass signups, and the buzz over analytics has also declined significantly since its release.

Really, if we were to look at Google's recent releases, the only relatively successful releases have been Google's Search (obviously), Adwords and Adsense (also obvious), Google Maps, and Gmail. The fact is, with the exception of Adwords and Adsense, Google has not been very successful in launching commercial products.

Google's Lack of Simplicity for 'Everyday' Users

The problem with most of Google's recent releases has been its lack of simplicity. Google's initial success in search was powered by the extreme simplicity they brought to the process. All the user saw was a search box and search results. What could be more simple? On top of that, search results were stunningly accurate compared to the other results available.

Although Adwords is confusing to many website owners, Adsense also carries the trait of being extraordinarily simple. Add in the benefit of being able to make a significant income from Adsense and it is no wonder that Google has a firm hold on the contextual ad market. For potential advertisers there is no greater reach than Google Adwords.

Yet most of Google's recent releases have either lacked the simplicity that made them the choice for every day users or offer no significant advantages over existing products. If PayPal is genuinely going to be threated by Gbuy, then Google is going to have to perfect the simplicity that PayPal has capitalized on.

Gbuy - Finding a Niche Among Website Owners

A few years back when K-Mart filed for bänkruptcy, I remember listening to an analysis which looked at the reasons why K-Mart was having difficulty. The analyst explained how there were three major players in the mega-stores: Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target. Wal-Mart had successfully positioned itself as the price-leader out of the three mega-stores while Target, although still inexpensive, positioned itself as slightly more expensive, but higher quality. K-Mart, in this environment, lacked an identity to shoppers.

Gbuy could very well fall into the same problem. PayPal has done a great job in solidifying itself as the payment solution of choice for millïons of Ebay merchants. In addition, thousands of other website owners have chosen to at least add PayPal as a payment option on their website due to its extreme simplicity for those who have PayPal accounts.

In a best case scenario Gbuy could really only hope to fit in as an alternate payment system to those who have already established how users are supposed to pay for their goods. In all reality, though, the market is crowded, and Ebay users will likely continue to use the integrated, easy to use PayPal over any new-commer - especially of Google fails to make a relatively simple product.

About The Author
Mark Daoust is the owner of Site Reference. It’s a personal initiative of my colleague, Sat Jiwan, who happens to be one of the greenest, cheapest people I know. For over a year now, he has been providing my office with loaves and loaves of free bread, making him our all-season Santa Claus of carbohydrates.

I’m not talking about just any bread, mind you. I’m getting organic, whole grain, name-brand bread. I get to choose from whole wheat, sunflower, cinnamon swirl, rye, and just about every other variety you can imagine. On average, I get a supply once every couple of weeks and can take home as much as I want. Sometimes I even get bagels and whole grain English muffins, too!

What’s the catch? Sat Jiwan volunteers at our local food co-op, and on a regular basis the baked goods hit their expiration dates. Around that time, co-op staff and volunteers can take home whatever unsold bread they want for free. Rather than see any of it go to waste, Sat Jiwan has lugged in anywhere from five to 20 loaves or more at a time to the office. Though we get our carbs near when they're ready to go stale, if they're transferred promptly to the freezer, the bread will last for several months and taste fine toasted. Because we have limited room in our staff freezer, everyone with access to our kitchen is periodically encouraged to take home as many loaves as possible.

We currently have over 10 different loaves in our office freezer, and Andre and I are working through about three loaves and a handful of bagels at home. I’ve also given Andre another four loaves to bring to work with him to make sandwiches for his lunches—and all that is just in the last month. These loaves retail for $3.49 to $3.99 each. My best estimate is that Sat Jiwan’s bounty has benefitted me personally to the tune of about $104.72 in the last year (or about 28 loaves at an average of $3.74 each—but in reality, Andre and I have probably eaten our way through even more than that, and I’m not even counting the bagels and other random baked goods we sometimes get).

This has also improved the quality of the food I eat, since I do not usually spring for organic grains on those rare occasions when I must actually shop for bread. And because Andre is addicted to carbs, this arrangement has kept us well-stocked whenever the sandwich urge hits him—which apparently is all the time. Best of all, it keeps pounds and pounds of food out of our local landfill and puts the bread where it should be: in people’s bellies.

This may seem like my own little gravy train, but the idea here is that volunteering—and sharing—can have additional benefits beyond the satisfaction of helping out an organization that needs it. (Sat Jiwan also gets a discount on all his co-op purchases in addition to the periodic freebies.) Now, I’m not suggesting that one should volunteer simply for the swag—although I’ve known people who have handed out theater programs, worked the door at concerts, or helped direct traffic at folk festivals just to see free shows, which strikes me as a pretty sweet deal, too. If you have an interest in making some part of your community a better place or putting in time for something you care about, you can often come away with a little something to help stretch your budget, even if there’s no “bread” involved. If you get a real windfall, share your good fortune with friends, family, coworkers, or housemates, and you may be pleasantly surprised at what kind of karmic benefits come back to you, too.

If you’re like me, you may not have time to volunteer as often as you’d like, and when you do volunteer, you end up planting underwater grasses in a creek or sitting on a committee somewhere, rather than gaining access to very much free food. No worries. There’s also the time-honored tradition of sharing where no volunteerism is required: the swap.

You’re probably already familiar with the concept, but for those who haven’t tried it, let's just say I'm a huge fan. All it takes to pull off a great swap is a free evening or afternoon, a meeting spot, and a group of people who like to share. In my office, we have arranged several clothes swaps in which we clean out our closets, bring in whatever we no longer want, and trade outfits; we then donate whatever is left over to a local charity and a nearby thrift store. I’ve also taken part in a small-scale book swap with some of my friends that I’d love to organize into a larger event with more literary connoisseurs. (Baltimore area residents can also check out this spectacular and more formally organized book swap that happens in Charles Village every weekend.) Swaps are great because they simultaneously help you clear out things you aren’t using, get things you will use for free, and keep all of those various things (or most, anyway) from heading into landfills. A win-win-win for cheapskates everywhere!

---

So, the president unveiled his proposed budget for 2007 this week, and it wasn’t very green. Take heart that we can at least manage our own budgets to reflect our values better than where our taxes may be headed. Suggestions: you may not need to spend quite so much on defending yourself. Give a little more to charity. Invest in renewable energy. Set some extra money aside for your health care. And put more money into savings. Bipartisan tightwads (and even a few politicians) agree: working from a deficit is a bad way to manage money.

--- by Jennifer Errick, Communications Associate
BA, University of Massachusetts. Reciprocal linking is one of the most
highly effective means of raising one's site ranking and bringing
targeted visitors to your sites. There are many ways to do this. More
free ways than you can imagine.

You may want to start with FFAs simply for the free linkage. The
chances of making a sale or referral are quite slim UNLESS you are
promoting Your Own Personal FFA via FFA. If you do this, make sure
the FFA that you are using allows you to edit your email signature
for the confirmation mail that will be sent to each poster on your FFA.
When editing your signature, be sure to add the links to your main
pages below your name. Openers of confirmation mails will see your
signature and links. If they are of use to the reader, you just sent a
spam-free email ad and raised your link popularity at the same time.

Blogs!!! Post to any blogs that allow it. Submit articles and use your
#1 link in reference with your signature. Post to blogs that actually
allow advertising (this one does). Choose blogs that have similar
content for direct advertising, choose blogs with various content for
indirect advertising via article sharing.

Are you a forum-hopper? Then you already know to add your links
to your signature in forums as well. You may also want to search
forums for offers of free reciprocal linking from webmasters that are
not in your immediate circle of friends and contacts. Spread out!

Classified websites are very good to link to. Classifieds hold various
content of many types and are also quite likely to be crawled by the
search engines. Strategically place and target your classified ads.
Look for a place to actually advertise on their site besides just posting
your advertisements.

Are you a reseller? Did you know that many reseller affiliate programs
promote your link in exchange for you promoting their links for
commissions? If you are already copy/pasting codes to your pages
to promote for commissions, then this method is for you.

Many traffic exchanges allow site linking or textlink impressions in
the surfbar. You may think this method is not effective, but its the
clicks and engine crawls that raise your link ranking.

Feel free to leave any permanent links pertaining to these subject.
Your input, comments, feedback, articles and links are welcome
here.

Please feel free to contact me to link to my plugin site: www.shannonsjobops.bravehost.com

FREE Website Advertising Ideas

If your trying to advertise your work from home website or any website using free techniques we have a few suggestions for you that you may want to take advantage of.

1. And the reasons for this are often profound. And profoundly unprofitable.

Yesterday, one of my oldest clients e-mailed me out of the blue and said what a wonderful job I had done with her account over the past four years. I smiled, thanked her and, since she’s a friend, I wrote in response: “Please tell all your rich friends about me.”

Her reply: “I have, but getting people to change what they’re doing financially is almost impossible -- no matter how badly they’re doing.”

I know from experience that she’s right. Getting humans to acknowledge that there might be a better way to manage their money is like gently suggesting to a loved one that he or she should drink less. They may listen to you the first time, but I wouldn’t bet on it. You need a full-scale familial intervention to make the point -- and even then it may not work.

I’m writing this entry to explain what I confront every week of my working life and to encourage you to change what you’re doing if what you’re doing is not working.

Here are some of the reasons people cling to a losing strategy:

1) They don’t really know how their portfolios are performing. Almost no one I know can tell you with any degree of accuracy how they’re investments have performed over time. “I’ve done alright, about in line with the market,” people will say. And then, when I look at their portfolio, I gasp, because the carnage looks like something out of Baghdad. If you don’t know exactly how you’ve done, I promise you this: Your performance is worse than you think. Why? Because that’s how the human brain works. We go through contortions to protect our self-esteem. We focus on the good months and put the bad years out of mind. We fixate on our Google (GOOG) winnings rather than recalling that loss in JDS Uniphase (JDSU), which happened to have been four times as large as the Google win, but no matter.

If you don’t know how you’re really performing, you can’t possibly know that it might be time for a change. So, I implore, keep very clear records of how you’re doing -- and don’t eliminate those wacky fliers you took on stocks that sought to bring nanotechnology to the bowling alley.

2) People console themselves with fact that no one they know is really doing any better than they are. In this regard, misery really does love company. To salve his wounds, one of my favorite clients repeatedly says that everyone got killed in the tech bubble. I’ve subtly suggested that I didn’t -- and that other value investors didn’t either -- but I don’t have the heart to confront him directly.

3) It’s painful to make a change. It’s not pleasant to acknowledge that the investment approach you’ve taken for 10 years is sub-par. It feels as if you’re confessing to a failure. I mean, imagine how much more money you’d have had if you’d done better. People hate acknowledging that they’ve been wrong. What’s really unfortunate -- and almost comical -- about this reason for staying with a bad approach is that 85% of mutual fund managers underperform the market. So there’s no shame in admitting that you can’t beat the averages. Some people can, but the vast majority cannot. Not beating the market is the human condition -- for most humans. My advice for most people would be to find some humans who do beat the market over time or to abandon the quest altogether and simply index.

4) People feel enormous -- and enormously misguided -- loyalty toward the financial professionals who’ve let them down for five, 10, 15 or 20 years. It’s very, very hard to dump a financial adviser, no matter how bad he is. I’ve seen this again and again. One 50-year-old I know was so phobic about telling her financial consultant at a major brokerage that she was leaving that she put off the call for years. My three-and-a-half-year-old daughter often behaves more maturely, but this is by no means unusual. First, lots of people genuinely like their brokers as human beings. (And why not? Being likable is one of a broker’s primary skills, after all. Sometimes it’s his only skill.) So they don’t want to hurt their feelings or their wallets. (They’ve seen those pictures of the kids with crooked teeth on his desk.) Second, once you entrust someone with a significant portion of your life savings, you often end up endowing them with substantial powers. You puff them up. Hey, they’re handling your loot, they better be good. And, if you’ve been with them a while, you know that they had a good year or two. That they nearly disemboweled your portfolio, however, is a fact that you prefer not to look at.

I have a friend who’s very bright, and her cousin, a broker, has done a lousy job with her money. I manage her husband’s money, and it’s taken her four and a half years to even consider giving me a little piece of her portfolio. We’ve talked about it over the years. “What can I do, he’s family?” she says. That’s like, “What can I do, I’m in a lousy marriage?” Well, you can try to make it better, and if that doesn’t work you can leave. But people’s inertia and their desire to protect the feelings of someone who has done a poor job of managing their assets are very powerful.

5) People feel that the next joker might be even worse. Giving someone your money to manage is like giving them your heart. It takes a leap of faith, a particularly huge leap when you’ve already been hurt. If, say, you’ve had two bad brokers, how confident could you possibly be that a third money manager would really be the charm? To some people, that sounds too much like a fairy tale.

6) For some people -- presumably not those of you reading this blog -- dealing with money is so unpleasant, so thoroughly uncomfortable and painful that it’s simply better to ignore the situation altogether. Obviously, this makes no financial sense but, to some people, it makes great emotional sense. To them, out of sight is out of mind.

So, yeah, I understand a lot of the reasons why people don’t take steps to improve their financial fate, but I don’t really understand. Because I’m wired differently. Twenty-five years ago I was an average investor. I got tired of just being average, and I completely overhauled my investment approach. It worked. But I’m enormously competitive and I hate losing. I have no talent for deceiving myself about my financial performance.

So, if you recognize yourself or any of your loved ones in this piece, just remember: There really is a better way. And it doesn’t have to be very painful at all.

                         By Andrew Feinberg
February 07, 2006

*Article taken from Kiplinger's Personal Finance

Please feel free to share 1 link with us if you choose to comment on this article.
